Aging and Wellness Considerations in I/DD Populations

As people with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (I/DD) live longer—with many reaching age 60 and beyond—significant aging and wellness considerations arise. The growing body of work in the disability field addressing aging of people with I/DD would benefit from increased engagement of the aging and disability fields.

This population often faces earlier onset of age-related conditions, such as dementia (particularly in Down syndrome), physical decline, and chronic health issues. Key considerations include maintaining health through proactive care, adapting housing for changing mobility needs, planning for retirement, managing medication, and addressing mental health. Addressing these needs requires a comprehensive approach that merges traditional geriatric care with specialized support for I/DD, focusing on maintaining independence and quality of life.
