Psychotropic Medication Support in the I/DD Population

This webinar will outline a clinical oversight framework for the safe, ethical, and appropriate use of psychotropic medications among individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). The content will emphasize person-centered decision-making, clear diagnostic indication, informed consent, human rights protections, and the use of the least restrictive alternatives before initiating or escalating medication. The framework also defines expectations for therapeutic drug monitoring, medication-specific safety review, documentation, interdisciplinary communication, and reassessment of ongoing need.

By identifying high-risk prescribing triggers and establishing a practical implementation checklist, this guidance supports consistent clinical practice, improved medication safety, protection of individual rights, and better quality-of-life outcomes for people receiving psychotropic medication support.
